PNG to PDF, with every pixel as it was

Screenshots, charts and scans

PNG is the format of screenshots, charts, diagrams and many scanning apps: sharp lines and flat colour, which a JPG would soften. Drop one image or several on the convert page, set their order and convert, and each becomes a page, on A4 or US Letter paper with a margin or without, or on a page the size of the image itself. Left to turn themselves, the pages follow their images, so a wide screenshot lies across a landscape page instead of shrinking into the middle of a portrait one.

The image data, as the file holds it

A PNG stores every pixel exactly, and a PDF can carry the very same compressed image data. So, where it can, that data goes into the PDF as it is in the file, and nothing is decoded and compressed again, colour palettes and transparent colours included. A PNG with a transparency channel of its own, or one saved interlaced, is decoded first and stored with every pixel unchanged. Where an image is see-through, the white of the page shows. The record says which way each image went, and the finished PDF is checked before it is offered.

Full resolution

No image is scaled down to save space. The PDF holds every pixel the PNG has, so a screenshot's small print is as fine in the PDF as it was in the image, and a screenshot from a high-resolution screen makes a sharper page than one from an ordinary screen.

What it turns away

An image above 100 million pixels, a poster-sized scan perhaps, is turned away unopened, and the message names its size beside the limit: the service opens no PDF that holds a larger picture. One whose pixels have to be read on the way in, to draw its transparency or because it was saved interlaced, takes more memory, so its line can be lower: 57.5 million pixels for a colour image with a transparency channel at the usual depth, and the message names the line for yours. Photos are on JPG to PDF.

Photos of identity documents — passports, identity cards and driving licences — are refused. Every PDF made here is looked at the way an upload is, and one taken for an identity document is deleted, with everything made from it, as the terms say.

How much at once

One conversion takes up to 50 files, 32 MB of them in all, and each file up to the size your plan uploads. For more files, convert them in batches and join the PDFs with Merge PDF. The PDF it makes holds no more pages than your plan allows in one document.

The record

The PDF says how it was made, in the record it carries and in your account's trail. For each file it names the kind, the fingerprint, and whether its image data went in as the file held it, or was decoded with every pixel kept. The files you send are kept only until the conversion has answered; the PDF is kept with your documents like any other, and deleted after 90 days, or whenever you erase it. What a download costs is on the pricing page.

Other files into PDF

Every kind of file the converter takes, and what the PDF keeps of each, is on Convert to PDF.
