Convert photos, documents and web pages to PDF
One PDF from the files you have
Drop the files on the convert page, put them in the order they belong, and convert. They come back as one PDF, each file starting on a page of its own: photos and scans, Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, plain text, Markdown and web pages saved as HTML, one kind or several together.
Convert files to PDF now — it opens the tool, with nothing to install.
What each kind of file keeps
A PDF can carry some files almost as they are and has to rebuild others, so how close it stays depends on the kind of file. The result says which it was for every file, and each kind has a page of its own that goes into the detail:
- JPG to PDF: the picture the camera saved goes in as it was saved, with nothing lost to a second compression.
- PNG to PDF: the image data goes in as the file holds it, or is decoded with every pixel kept.
- HEIC to PDF: each photo is saved again, as a JPEG, because a PDF cannot hold HEIC.
- Word to PDF, Excel to PDF and PowerPoint to PDF: laid out by LibreOffice rather than Microsoft Office, and the result names any difference it can detect.
- Text to PDF: plain text and Markdown are set as real text, to be searched and copied.
- HTML to PDF: a saved web page is laid out as searchable text from the file alone, and nothing it points to is fetched.
TIFF, WebP and AVIF pictures are taken too, as pages in your order; the JPG page says what becomes of each. However a photo comes, on its own or inside a document, a Markdown file or a web page, what the camera noted beside it, such as where it was taken, is left out of the PDF.
Several kinds in one PDF
The photos of a set of receipts, a report written in Word and the spreadsheet behind it can go in together, in one conversion. The paper, the way the pages turn and the margin you choose are for photos, text and web pages: A4 or US Letter, or, for a photo, a page the size of the photo. A Word, Excel or PowerPoint file keeps the paper, orientation and margins it was made with.
One conversion takes up to 50 files, 32 MB of them in all, each up to the size your plan uploads, and makes a PDF of no more pages than your plan allows in one document. For more files, convert them in batches and join the PDFs with Merge PDF.
A refusal rather than a guess
Nothing is made until every file can be made well. When one cannot, the conversion stops, and you are told which file it was and why, in plain words: a kind of file the converter does not take, which it names; a document that needs a password to open, which the converter cannot take; a picture larger than its kind allows, or a document that needs more memory to draw than one conversion has; a character none of its typefaces can draw, which would otherwise be an empty box; or a document still being laid out when its time runs out. The largest picture is 100 million pixels for a JPG or PNG whose own data goes in, and can be smaller for one that has to be decoded first, as the JPG, PNG and HEIC pages say.
Photos of identity documents — passports, identity cards and driving licences — are refused. Every PDF made here is looked at the way an upload is, and one taken for an identity document is deleted, with everything made from it, as the terms say.
The record
Every PDF made here carries a record of how it was made, and your account's trail keeps one too: for each file, what kind it was, its fingerprint, and how close the PDF stays to it. The files you send are kept only until the conversion has answered. The PDF stays with your documents until you erase it, and for 90 days at most. What a download costs is on the pricing page.
And then
- Compress PDF, for a PDF of photos too large to send
- OCR PDF, to make a photographed page searchable
- Merge PDF, to join it to PDFs you already have
- Protect PDF, to give the PDF a password before it goes out
