Bates numbering for PDF productions
Bates numbers across a whole production
Choose a prefix, the first number and how many digits, and every page of every document is numbered in the order you give them — ACME-000001 on the first page of the first file, running on without a gap into the next. Each document comes back as its own file, named for its first and last number, and the record gives the next number, to carry the next production on.
Kept, and kept apart
Numbers are drawn over the pages, never into them: every page is the same stored bytes as before, compared before the files are made, and a number that would land on the page's own words is refused rather than drawn over them. A Bates number, once added, is protected like a watermark: no correction here will change or remove it.
Bates-number documents now — it opens the tool, with nothing to install.
The record
The new file says what was added to it, on which pages and where, in the record it carries and in your account's trail. The file you started from stays as it was. Files are deleted after 90 days, or whenever you erase them.
